Re designation as Notified Body for NAWI and MID

The Tyne and Wear Metrology Laboratory has been re designated as a Notified Body for the re cast EC Directives in March 2016 after a successful audit.

Successful UKAS Surveillance Audit

Mid February 2016 saw the Tyne and Wear Metrology Laboratory being audited by UKAS.The day and half audit was concluded successfully.  Due to changes in EN 71 Part 3, regretfully the laboratory withdrew its accreditation for chemical testing as the equipment required to maintain accreditation was to prohibitive to purchase.

Practical and Oral Examination Training for DCATS

The Tyne and Wear Metrology Laboratory provided four days of tuition and revision on behalf of the Trading Standards Institute in October 2015.

Portfolio building course 7 and 8 May 2014

The Gateshead Metrology Laboratory and North East London Metrology Partnership provided a portfolio building course at Hornchurch.  The two day event covered laboratory equipment and a visit to a bulk fuel haulier and testing a dynamic axle weigher.

The Gateshead Metrology Laboratory and North East London Metrology Partnership provided a portfolio building course at Hornchurch.  The two day event covered laboratory equipment and a visit to a meat packer to see how equipment is used in a ‘live’ situation.

LOTSA Metrology Update Training 7 and 8 April 2014

Andy has been asked to deliver a two day metrology update and refresher training for LOTSA at Camden Town Hall.  TSI will be awarding CPPD hours for the sessions.

NMO Metrology Seminar March 2014

Andy has been asked to deliver a presentation as Lead Officer for Metrology of the Trading Standards Institute at this year’s seminar in Birmingham.  He will cover the Powers review, metrology competence building and changes to the practical examination.

Three week internship for Standards Board of Jamaica

 In March 2014 a member of the Standards Board spent three weeks at the laboratory learning how it operates under the UKAS regime at the E2 level.  The time was spent on uncertainty budgets, evaluation of comparators and OIML R111 calibrations.

Electrical Safety Week 23 to 27 September 2013

To start the electrical safety project for 2013, the Metrology Laboratory is participating in Electrical Safety Week.  Officers from the laboratory will be in the foyer at the Civic Centre of Gateshead Council from 9am until 12am.  Appointments to check appliances will be taken for a home inspection if required. Another ESC Funding Bid Successful

In July, the laboratory was once again successfully awarded funding for its educational talks and PAT testing of small electrical appliances in residential homes.  The schedule for checks will be published shortly.

Mid June 2013 saw the Tyne and Wear Metrology Laboratory being audited for NAWI notified body status .The day audit was concluded successfully.  An extension of scope to the Measuring Instruments Directive is with the National Measurement Office.

Interview on BBC Radio Wales

On June 6th 2013, Andy was interviewed on radio in connection with how trading standards can combat the illicit tobacco trade.

Screen Testing for Reduced Ignition Propensity of Cigarettes

May 2013, the laboratory has developed a screen test for the RIP testing of cigarettes.  One of the causes of house fires is discarded cigarettes therefore it is imperative that cigarettes placed upon the market, whatever the source, meets the requirement.  The screen test is based on BS EN ISO 12863:2010

Licence to Sell

An article about Published in TS Today (December 2012) on the need for Tobacco licensing in the fight against illicit tobacco sales.

Accreditation to 0.5 mg

UKAS has accredited the laboratory to 0.5 mg at E2 equivalent level.  There are few labs in the UK that are accredited at this low level.

ESC Sponsored Visits Underway

The Tyne and Wear Metrology Laboratory is now undertaking the inspections of various vulnerable adults premises throughout the region.  Many possibly overloaded power adapters are being replaced for safer individually switched trailing sockets.  Presently, the most common faulty appliance found in the premises is irons.  There are a high number failing due to the cords separating and revealing the plastic sheath protecting the conducting wires.  Staff are urging consumers to check all power cords on their appliances visually for any damage and not to use appliances with damaged cords.

The Tyne and Wear Metrology Laboratory can now offer to DCATS candidates preparing for their practical and oral examinations at NMO a training package.  The course covers both elements and involves hands on testing of the equipment on the syllabus rather than just the theory.  Training in preparation for the November 2012 examinations is now open with the booking at the TSI website.

Failed Electric Blankets Donated to the RSPCA - September 2011

The Tyne and Wear Metrology Laboratory has donated electrical blankets that have failed electrical safety checks that it conducts annually for the residents of the five authorities that make up up the region.  All wiring was removed prior to donating them to the RSPCA so that they could be used for bedding for rescued animals.
